Hello all. Sorry to those how have actually been reading this. I have been in hiatus partly because I could not get the creativity a flowin and partly because I was ill. It was bound to happen eventually. When I have a cold it hits the sinuses hard and therefore makes it hard to concentrate. But I feel better now and was able to write a couple of pages for Fae'th in Time. I hope you like and as always constructive comments are welcome. It's not much but there is more on the way.
It was only a moment later three hyden beasts jumped out from the bushes. The Rani rode on the back of the largest of the three beasts.
“FLYERS!!” The Rani called.
Four winged creatures flew down from the sky and flapped in place around the Rani. Their head and torso resembled that of the other Noc. In place of their arms and legs were two blood red wings, one on each side. Two pair of insect like legs were attached to the area where the wings were connected to the torso and each leg had a pincer like claw at the end of it.
“Nothing yet misstresssss.,” the flyer closest to her said. She slapped the flyer in the face. The action made him hiss loudly.
“Oh what good are you. I will have to make a note to not add so much stupid in the next batch of you I cook up. Go take to the skys and find them. Their fire pit is still smoking, they could not have gotten far.” The Rani yelled as the the flyers flew away to the east.
“Damn dragon let that she-witch out. That’s never good.” Bernard whispered as he kept an eye on the camp’s new occupants.
“You know her?” The Doctor asked in a surprised whisper.
“Where have you been these past three cycles. Ever since she showed up people have been disappearing in the middle of the night. They say she takes them to a secret place and makes them into creatures that defy nature. Those flyers are one of her special creations. She says she is using magic but most believe she is using science. If Drago found out she was using science instead of magic, he would be quite upset. I…”
Julie put her finger to his lips to shush him. One of the beasts seemed to be drifting in their direction. Julie could hear its large nose sniff the ground as it neared. The three slid to the bottom of the pit and tried not to make a noise.
That’s when the worst smell Julie had ever had the displeasure of knowing attacked her nose. The Doctor smelled it as well, it reminded him of rotten eggs sitting on a fresh pile of cow manure covered in sour milk on a hot summer day. The two suppressed their gag reflexes best they could as they looked over to Bernard who also looked away as if the culprit was some imaginary friend of his.
“It happens when I get nervous.” He said in defense of his silent flatulence.
They could hear the sniffing of the Hyden beast stop above them. It then began to whimper as if it was in pain and a thud was heard.
“Oh what now. Get up you mangey mutt. What’s wrong?” The Rani asked. Her voice got louder as she talked. The Doctor knew she was coming their way and that it would only be a matter of moments before she found their hiding spot. He pulled out the sonic screwdriver and made to activate it when the troll put his hand up to stop him. Then Bernard pointed at a very large cage covered in a blanket. Bernard pulled the cover off to reveal four rabbit shaped animals. They were similar to rabbits on earth except they had two powerful front legs as well as the normal rabbit back legs. Bernard held up three fingers as he took hold of the rope attached to what appeared to be the front of the cage. The Doctor knew what the plan was and readied the screw driver.
Bernard counted down with his fingers. Three…two…one. Bernard pulled the string as the Doctor activated the screwdriver. An opening appeared above the cage at the same time the top of the cage opened. The rabbits shot up out of the hole.
The beasts first howled in pain from the screw driver and then saw the rabbits. The rabbits saw the beasts and headed off east, deep into the woods at breakneck speed. The Hyden beasts, being dogs, chased after them.
“Damn you doctorrrrrrr….” The Rani’s voice trailed off as the beast she was on joined the others in the chase. After a moment, the three hole inhabitants lifted the lid off their hiding spot.
“Good job guys. I don’t think we will be seeing them for a while.” Shaden commented as he appeared. “Lucky for us we need to head west. Time to pound some dirt.”
Donna-Lé jumped down to join the group and they ran in a straight line with Shaden in the lead. The group ran until they felt they had put enough distance between them and their pursuers. They changed their pace to a brisk walk. Shaden let Bernard take the lead and fell in step next to the Doctor.
“ I will say Chief you’re quick on your feet. Escaping seems to be another one of your expertise.” The thief commented.
“You could say that. Evading seems to be yours.” The Doctor observed.
“Comes with the job,” Shaden then looked over to Julie who had just let out a small yelp as a branch hit her arm, “Don’t worry blue eyes we will soon reach the road and it’s a far easier walk.”
Shaden moved up to the front of the line again. Julie walked up next to the Doctor to ask a question that had been in her head for a while.
“Doctor is it me or does Shaden not quite fit in with …well everything here?”
“I have a theory about that. It relates to how he was able to command the gate without a key. Shaden here appears to be extremely sensitive to ether though he may not know it. The problem with that is those who are very ether sensitive are also sensitive to Radio signals.”
“So you think Shaden is the way he is because he could be picking up radio waves from earth?” Julie deduced. The Doctor smiled wide.
“Exactly. He has probably been hearing them since birth. I am surprised he has lasted this long.”
Julie looked a little puzzled at this comment but the Doctor quickly explained.
” Part of the downfall of the Valdsudians was their driving goal to become one with the ether. They believed it would bring them eternal life. Unfortunately as they altered themselves to become more and more ether sensitive they would pick up more and more radio waves from space. Let me tell you it’s a noisy place up there. The drive to live forever made them blind to what was happening with each generation of altered Valdsudians. The entire race eventually went mad and died out over a thousand years ago.”
“That’s so sad. In a way though they have survived, through their experiment here.” Julie stated.
“That is true and…” The Doctor’s reply was cut off by the sound of wolf howls in the distance behind them. The entire group ran without a word. They soon found themselves on a dirt road. Shaden was ahead of the group and headed towards what looked like an abandoned wagon attached to three horses.
“Here’s Our ride Come on” Shaden yelled and soon everyone was in the wagon except for Bernard who had trouble jumping into the back of it. The Doctor and Julie grabbed the troll by his shirt and pulled him into the wagon. As soon as Bernard’s feet left the ground, Shaden gave a whip of the straps and the horses took off. A man appeared from the bushes and yelled at the wagon as he tried to pull up his pants.
Shaden laughed as he gave another whip of the straps, “Now that’s what I call being caught with your pants down, hahahahaha!!”
